Our Philosophy

  • Alcohol abuse is a primary cause of legal, domestic, and health problems in our country.
  • The abuse of alcohol causes tremendous harm to us and to our society in at least four important ways.
  • Alcohol is a leading factor in traffic accidents and fatalities.
  • The abuse of alcohol is implicated in a number of health problems including cardiovascular problems and liver disease.
  • Alcohol is the most significant personnel and production problem for business and industry. The abuse of alcohol costs this country about $33 billion per year with almost $12 billion due to lost production, $10.34 billion due to added medical costs and $8.25 billion due to motor vehicle accidents.
  • Because alcohol is a mind altering drug, its abuse leads to numerous psychological and spiritual problems, which are exacerbated and maintained by the drinker's denial of the effect of alcohol in his or life.
  • Estimates of the number of people who have a problem with alcohol range anywhere from at least 5% to 6% who are addicted, that is, alcoholics in the true sense of the word and to 10% to 20% who abuse alcohol in some way. The important question is whether the amount of alcohol consumed or the frequency of consumption or the situation in which one drinks ever causes a problem or a complaint by a family member, the law or an employer. If the answer is "yes," then it is wise to seek help.

The treatment philosophy of the Anchor DUI Program is based on these premises:

(1) Alcohol dependence is a bio-chemical phenomenon. Therefore, effective treatment must address the changes in the body of the alcohol or drug dependent person.

(2) Alcohol abuse and dependence is a family problem. Members of the family tend to become caught up in a distinctive pattern of dependence and co-dependence where one or several other people play an enabling role in maintaining the abusive drinking. Therefore, treatment must involve other members of the family.

(3) Alcohol abuse is a problem of the human spirit. Therefore, effective treatment addresses underlying spiritual issues in order not only to prevent abusive drinking but to help the client toward a full recovery of his or her human potentiality. The AA 12-Step program provides a framework to guide the client through recovery.
